Tantramar Area

About the Tantramar Area

The Tantramar Area is located in the southeastern part of New Brunswick. It gets its name from the famous Tantramar Marsh, a tidal salt marsh around the Bay of Fundy.

The Tantramar Area includes the communities of Aulac, Bayfield, Botsford, Cape Spear, Cape Tormentine, Dorchester, Little Shemogue, Melrose, Midgic, Murray Corner, Point de Bute, Port Elgin Sackville, Timber River, Upper Cape, and Westmorland; and the Fort Folly First Nation. More information about the community is available in the 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment for this area.

The hub of the Tantramar Area is the Town of Sackville, where Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital is located. It is made up of independent and creative entrepreneurs, artists, businesspeople and academics. The charming town of Sackville is home to Canada’s #1 undergraduate university – Mount Allison, great coffee shops and restaurants, galleries, festivals, and family friendly outdoor spaces. Click here to learn more about what makes Sackville a great place to live and work.

Primary health care services in the Tantramar Area are provided through Horizon’s Port Elgin and Region Health Centre and private physician offices. Some residents from the area also travel to other communities such as Moncton or Amherst, Nova Scotia to access primary health-care services.

Learn more about how Horizon is working to deliver a health care experience where the needs of our patients, clients and communities come first and where New Brunswickers have timely access to services in appropriate settings in our strategic plan.

The rest of the Tantramar Area is made up of more rural communities where you are surrounded by scenic views, within minutes of beautiful beaches, and less than an hour from Ski Wentworth. Proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway allows residents to enjoy the quaint rural lifestyle of the Tantramar Area with quick access to the amenities of larger New Brunswick cities and neighbouring provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
