Every year, we recognize the extraordinary achievements and contributions of Horizon employees and physicians. We recognize achievements in all areas – from clinical, community, leadership, quality, safety, development and more. We also acknowledge and award employees and physicians for their longstanding service at Horizon and celebrate retirement as an important milestone. Say Bravo! Bravo!, Horizon’s employee recognition program was launched in 2016, and since then, more than 100,000 Bravo! nominations have been shared! Bravo! provides an opportunity for patients and family members to say thank you for quality care and for Horizon staff and physicians to recognize the excellence of their colleagues. Each Bravo! brings three moments of positivity. COVID-19 prevented us from celebrating this year’s 2,000+ Years of Service recipients in person, but managers and department heads took time to recognize those across Horizon celebrating milestones ranging from five to 50 years of service. Congratulations to all! This is deferred for 2023. However, applications are still being accepted for the 2024 awards. The annual Patient Safety Hero Awards are presented to one individual and one team within Horizon who exemplify commitment to patient safety, innovative practice, collaborative spirit, and patient-centredness in their daily work. 2023 Recipients There are two categories for this award, individual and team. Individual: Gillian Gillies, Clinical Director Ambulatory Care & Oncology and Stephanie Scheffelmaier Nurse Manager Ambulatory Care & Endoscopy, Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Gillian demonstrates commitment to patient-centered care while maintaining conscientious attention to the culture of patient safety. “Gillian is very patient focused in every decision she makes as a leader. As a former patient representative, she takes to heart any concerns brought to her attention with great care. She has come in on many weekends and evenings to spend time with families, enhance communication with care teams, and to support/problem solve with the after-hours team members.” (Nominator). Stephanie’s partnerships and open communication demonstrate her collaborative spirit and approach towards a culture of patient safety. “Stephanie makes Patient Safety the cornerstone of her practice with a compassionate approach and ensures her staff lead in the same selfless actions. She is attentive to best practice and if she ever questions concern of patient safety around processes, procedures, or complex cases, she consults with Nursing Practice, her peers, other Managers, and the Quality Team.” (Nominator). Team: Centre Noreen Richard Team In using reflexive practice, the Centre Noreen Richard Team routinely questions what they can do to minimize harm or improve future actions to unforeseen events. While recognizing the importance of patient safety measures, they ensure incidents are reported to analyze and improve future risks, recommendations are made when there’s an opportunity for improvement and communicate directly with their patients and families following incidents to offer support, compassion and to provide feedback on actions taken. Horizon recognizes the importance of professional development opportunities for its employees. Leading One Horizon is a program to support Horizon managers in developing a more solid grounding in core management competencies. There are four components to the program: You as a Leader; Leading People; Managing the Work of the Department; and Moving Forward. To graduate from this program, participants complete 75 hours of virtual learning over a 10-month period. The program provides an opportunity for Horizon’s people leaders to network, hone leadership skills through iterative and collaborative learning, and work together to share knowledge to solve complex Horizon case studies. Leading One Horizon was recently recognized by the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Horizon employees who complete the Leading One Horizon program receive credits towards the nationally recognized LEADS in a Caring Environment certification.
