Obstetrics and Gynecology

What is Obstetrics?

Obstetric services provide care to women during pregnancy and the period following the delivery of the newborn.

What I need to know:

Maternity/Newborn units provide care to both mother and baby after delivery which includes monitoring and assessment. Women who may have early contractions, high blood pressure or multiple births may also be admitted to this unit before the baby is born.

In the Maternity/Newborn units, the baby stays in the room with the mother. The mother and family take care of the baby from birth, to learn how to care for their newborn. This is an important time for the new parents to become comfortable with the care of their baby.

During their stay, the health professionals provide care to the mother and baby based upon individual needs. Often the mother and baby go home within 24hrs of birth.

The Women and Children’s Health Program offers a variety of clinics across the Region for the mother and baby. They include but are not limited to:

  • Breastfeeding Support Clinics
  • Mother and Baby support clinics
  • Prenatal clinics
  • Clinics to support high risk pregnancies
