Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a patient-centered approach to surgery that encourages YOU to be an active participant in your surgical journey.

It is a standardized approach used around the world that ensures patients have the best possible surgical care.

If you are in our care for a hip and knee replacement or colorectal surgery, you may be part of Horizon’s new ERAS initiative, which will improve your surgical experience.

ERAS focuses on getting you strong before surgery, ensuring you recover safely, and helping you return home as soon as possible.

To best prepare for your surgery, we encourage you to:

  • be as active as possible
  • stop smoking
  • limit your alcohol intake
  • eat healthy, and
  • ensure you discuss any health concerns with your primary care provider.

After surgery, we will ensure your pain is well controlled, which will allow you to be active earlier in your recovery. Rest assured, your health care team will be there to support you the whole time.

ERAS has been proven to decrease complications and readmissions to hospital after surgery. It also decreases the length of time you have to stay in the hospital.

ERAS means that surgery will have less of an impact on your life so you can get back to enjoying the things that matter.
