Blood and Specimen Collection

Before visiting the specimen collection sites at any of our Horizon facilities, please ensure you always bring your New Brunswick Medicare card or a piece of valid government-issued identification.

All our specimen collection sites have booked appointments. Contact information for inquiries about specimen collection or inquiries about your appointment can be found below.

Horizon Health Network’s (Horizon) laboratories provide specimen collection services in several locations throughout New Brunswick. Blood collection is performed by medical laboratory professionals such as phlebotomists/medical laboratory assistants and technologists to ensure quality specimens are obtained for testing. These health care professionals will also explain all specimen collection procedures to you. Please ask your health care provider if you have any questions regarding the laboratory tests.

Horizon labs across New Brunswick employ more than 600 people and process:

  • almost 4 million specimens a year;
  • about 10,000 specimens a day;
  • about 8,000 tubes of blood a day;
  • about 1,000 urine samples a day; and
  • more than 16 million tests per year – that is more than one result every 2 seconds!

Testing is performed by medical laboratory professionals such as medical laboratory technologists, who are registered with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and licenced by the New Brunswick Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NBSMLT). Medical laboratory technologists and medical laboratory physicians such as pathologists provide information needed to screen for disease, diagnose, treat, and monitor your medical condition. Testing procedures in Horizon laboratories are performed using the latest technology, accreditation standards and guidelines to ensure quality patient care. Your laboratory results are kept strictly confidential and will be sent to your health care provider as soon as they are available.

Horizon lab staff work in a variety of specialties, some of which include:

  • Specimen Collection
  • Central Receiving & Referrals
  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Chemistry
  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Microbiology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology/Autopsy
  • Cytopathology
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Cytogenetics
  • TB Lab (Level III capabilities)
  • Stem Cell Retrieval

Laboratories can only accept test requests from health care providers who have a valid licence in any Atlantic Province (College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador), nurse practitioners within Horizon or working directly under a privileged physician by the New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons; pharmacists who possess a valid license stating Active Pharmacist Direct Client Care with the NB College of Pharmacists; dentists with special licences as approved by Medical Staff Office, and midwives employed by Horizon.

Request forms (requisitions) must contain the first and last name of the health care provider to be processed.

What is Self-Booking for Laboratory Specimen Collection at Horizon Health Network?

Self-Booking allows patients to schedule specimen collection appointments at Horizon Health Network independently, using an online platform without the need for direct assistance from staff: access the Self-Booking system in English or French. This new service provides patients with a new, easy, and modern way to book their own bloodwork and other specimen collection appointments. Click here for additional FAQs.

How do I prepare for a test?

Your health care provider will tell you how to prepare for a test. Some instructions are available online by clicking here. Please feel free to share your concerns with our laboratory staff if you are nervous about having your blood taken or other procedures. Your comfort is important to us. Please remember: You must present either your Medicare card or a piece of valid government-issued identification to have a test done.

Should I be concerned about my privacy?

We take your privacy seriously. We ask for your personal information to ensure samples and test results match with the right person. Results are kept in strict confidence at all times and only your health care provider will be able to access test results. Click here to read more about personal health information and privacy.

When can I expect to receive test results?

Our laboratory works to provide health care providers test results in a timely manner. Most routine test results are ready within 24 hours of collection. Specialized testing may take longer, sometimes up to two weeks to one month. Results are not provided directly to the patient unless the health care provider has made arrangements for the patient to receive and self-monitor as in INR testing to monitor blood-thinning medicines. Therefore, you can expect to receive test results from your health care provider.
