Lymphedema Treatment Lymphedema affects the head, neck, trunk/genitals, and/or upper extremities and lower extremities of your body. It is a condition that can be diagnosed by your primary care provider. It develops when the body is unable to remove excess water and protein, resulting in swelling. If left untreated, the excess fluid can bring complications, such as an infection. Horizon’s physiotherapists have specialized training to help patients manage this fluid with a variety of treatments including complete decongestive therapy, meaning manual lymph drainage, compression, exercise, and education on self-management. When attending an appointment, be prepared to expose the affected area in a comfortable setting. It is best to wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the affected joint (knee, shoulder, ankle, etc.) when you come for your appointment.Patients can be referred by their primary care provider/surgeon for physiotherapy treatments. Patients also have the option to self-refer to our department.
