What is an ECG (Electrocardiogram)?

An ECG (electrocardiogram) also known as in EKG is a procedure that records the electrical activity of the heart.

Reasons an ECG may be done:

• As part of a routine checkup or preoperative workup for surgery.
• To help determine the cause of chest pain.
• To evaluate other signs and symptoms which may be heart-related, such as fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting.
• To identify an irregular heartbeat.

How long does an ECG take?

The test takes only a few minutes and does not cause any discomfort.

Is there any special prep needed prior to an ECG?

• Wear clothes that allow easy access to your chest.
• Avoid the use of baby oil or lotion before the test as it may prevent the electrodes from sticking properly on your skin.

What can I expect during the procedure?

• You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up only. Women will be asked to remove their pantyhose. The technologist will ensure your privacy by covering you with a gown and exposing only the necessary areas.
• You will lie flat on a bed for the procedure. It will be important for you to lie still and relax during the procedure.
• If your chest, arms or legs are very hairy, small patches of hair may be shaved, as needed, to allow the electrodes to stick to the skin properly.
• There will be 10 electrodes attached to you. 6 to your chest around your heart and 1 on each arm and leg. The lead wires from the ECG machine will be attached to the electrodes.
• The ECG will be started. It will take only a short time for the tracing to be completed.
• Once the tracing is completed, the technologist will disconnect the leads and remove the skin electrodes.
