Area 2: Fundy Shore & Saint John

Caring for Mind, Body and Spirit

The Cancer Support Program is designed to address the emotional, social, physical, and practical challenges of those facing cancer through offerings of exercise & movement, education & self-development, symptom management, and through individual or group support programs. The Program aims to provide free, accessible, comprehensive support that helps to improve the quality of life for all participants.

Horizon has partnered with Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation (Wellspring) to provide research and evidence-based programming for those with lived cancer experience. Wellspring is a leader in the field of cancer support in Canada since 1992 with over 150 different program offerings (online and in-person), online self paced resources, and a verified source of information and research. We are pleased to incorporate their programs into our local Cancer Support Program.

In 2023, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation announced a $2 million donation by Irving Oil, the late Arthur Irving, Sandra and Sarah Irving as well as the Arthur L. Irving Foundation to enhance and expand the Cancer Support Program within the greater Saint John area of Horizon. This generosity has allowed us to expand our Stay Strong Cancer Rehabilitation Program to 4 days a week at the YMCA, and to open a holistic community-based Cancer Support Program Centre. Located in Saint John, 3 minutes from the Saint John Regional Hospital at 1000 Sandy Point Road, this welcoming space has quickly become a hub of warmth and community, offering those living with cancer a place to find connection and support, no matter where they are on their journey.

In 2024, the Sussex Health Centre Foundation and the Charlotte County Hospital Foundation committed funding to bring Cancer Support Programming to their rural communities.  We aim to deliver 2 sessions per year in partnership with local fitness/wellness facilities. This blended approach will offer 12-week Stay Strong Program to participants twice per week and will provide 12 weeks of Wellspring programing as an education component.

Our Centre is open Monday to Friday and is a wonderful spot to take in programs, seek resources/support or to sit with a cup of tea between appointments at the SJRH Cancer Clinic.

An evidence-based program that dispels nutritional myths, provides the latest recommendations on cancer-related eating, and offers helpful tips for selecting and preparing foods to help you live better with cancer.

Relaxation and visualization (also known as guided imagery) techniques can be powerful and effective ways to help you exercise control over your physical and emotional well-being. Learn to manage cancer-related symptoms such as pain, fear, anxiety, sleeplessness, and feelings of isolation or being overwhelmed.

Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of cancer and its treatments. Cancer-related fatigue is a sense of physical, emotional, and cognitive (thinking) tiredness which does not go away after rest. It can have a negative impact on work, relationships, mood, daily activities, and your overall quality of life. This 4-part series will help you acknowledge the impact that fatigue is having on your life and provide strategies to mitigate its impact.

Yoga, whether in a chair or without, helps you improve your physical and emotional well-being. It emphasizes the connection between mind and body, which helps reduce stress, lower pain, improve mobility, and regulate emotions. It encompasses a wide variety of poses and postures that promote flexibility, strength, and balance, while bringing awareness to breath and mindful presence.

Musical expression and art have been helping people manage the side effects of cancer for decades. These programs and workshops use techniques like painting drawing, sculpture, drumming, singing and listening to music to help people reduce common symptoms like pain, fatigue, anxiety, loneliness, and sleeplessness. Come together in a community of healing through art. Simply select the workshop that’s right for you based on interest – no experience necessary.

It’s common for people experiencing cancer and its treatments to feel foggy, to forget things, to feel as though they are processing information more slowly. “Brain Fog” refers to a change in cognition (thinking) which affects over half of cancer patients, sometimes after they complete their treatment. This program provides tools to help improve memory, thinking and task completion for participants, and in doing so, can improve overall quality of life.

We know how important it is to simply feel like yourself, especially when going through cancer treatment.  At the Look Good Feel Better workshops, both in-person and online, people with cancer can learn how to manage the appearance-related impact of the disease and its treatment within one year of their cancer treatment.

Offering a unique sense of community, you’ll be part of a small group, with different cancer diagnoses and going through different treatments, who come together to learn and share. Led by our expert volunteers, you’ll walk through a series of signature steps designed to help you feel like yourself again.
