Cancer Services – Who we are and what we do

Horizon’s Oncology Program is a comprehensive provincial service that provides systemic therapy, radiation therapy as well as supportive care and follow-up care to patients diagnosed with cancer.

Systemic Therapy or Chemotherapy (chemo) is the use of one or more drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be used alone or used combined with other treatments such as surgery or radiation therapy.

Radiation Therapy is the controlled use of a radiation beam to destroy a cancerous tumour. Radiation Therapy destroys cells either directly or by interfering with cell reproduction. Radiation Therapy may be used by itself or combined with other treatment modalities. The Horizon Health Network Oncology Program Radiation Treatment Program is based out of the Saint John Regional Hospital.

The Oncology Program is actively involved in clinical trials which ensure that patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted protocols and by means of the latest equipment and techniques.

The New Brunswick Stem Cell Transplantation program is based out of the Saint John Regional Hospital and offers services to patients from throughout the province.
