More patients receiving outpatient care closer to home at Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital

(SACKVILLE) – It’s been a successful year for the Ambulatory Care Clinic at Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital (SMH), with hundreds of patients now accessing expanded outpatient care each month.

Last year, the clinic added minor procedure and treatment services, including excision of lesions, drain removal, and infusions, will help accommodate more patients, an improvement made possible thanks to a collaborative effort led by physicians and health care professionals who are committed to providing the best possible care to patients in the area. The addition of these services at the clinic means more patients can receive treatment closer to home.

“Through word of mouth and ongoing communication with primary care providers and specialists in the area, we have seen a significant increase in the number of patients compared to the same month last year,” said Christa Wheeler-Thorne, Executive Director for Horizon Health Network’s Moncton area. “Our Ambulatory Care Clinic staff take pride in their work, value the meaningful connections they have with patients, and are pleased to offer these vital services close to home.”

The Ambulatory Care Clinic at Sackville Memorial Hospital now serves approximately 300 patients each month, marking a 47% increase compared to the same period last year. The staff go above and beyond to make patients feel comfortable and cared for, and support hospital morale in hosting staff events such as a Valentine’s tea, Easter egg hunts in the hospital’s atrium, and using tiaras, tutus, and confetti cannons to celebrate patients’ milestones.

“At Horizon, we are proud to collaborate with community stakeholders such as the Tantramar and Strait Shores Rural Health Action Groups to identify opportunities to enhance health care delivery in the region, including improved access to primary care and outpatient services,” said Wheeler-Thorne. “We are committed to keeping the public informed as these efforts progress, using the communication channels preferred by area residents, as highlighted in our recent Community News Survey conducted in the Tantramar and Straight Shores’ region.”
