Rehabilitation Physician (Physiatrist) Adult Services Paediatric Services Assistive Technology Services Rehabilitation Physician (Physiatrist) What is a Rehabilitation Physician (Physiatrist)? Currently we have 5 full-time rehabilitation doctors, also called physiatrists. These physicians specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation for four to five years after completion of medical school. They therefore have special knowledge of disease processes that may decrease function and of ways to increase independence. They are used to working with a team and have a great working knowledge of the programs and services available to increase function, particularly at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, but also beyond. These services include therapy, technology advancements, surgery and also include research trials. A referral to a physiatrist is often helpful to review, plan, and follow ones rehabilitation goals. At times, as well, it may direct individuals to more appropriate services. Dr. Colleen O’Connell, Physiatrist/Medical Director, SCCR Who we are Currently we have three physiatrists who works with the Adult Team, one who works with the Paediatric Team, and one physiatrist who works with both teams. Who we help Patients evaluated by the physiatrists at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation include patients with traumatic and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and disease, complex stroke, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, congenital/hereditary neurologic disorders, upper extremity amputees, brachial plexus injuries, and other complex neurological disorders. Patients with musculoskeletal diagnoses such as chronic neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis are not seen at this Centre. What is the cost of services The cost for these services is covered through the provincial Medicare system.
