Stroke Program What is the Stroke Program? Horizon’s Stroke Program involves: Thrombolysis – a therapy to dissolve dangerous blood clotsEndovascular therapy – the insertion of thin tubes in affected areas, only visible under X-raysTelestroke Care – for patients with acute ischemic stroke (sudden loss of blood circulation to an area of the brain), as well as specialist, nursing and allied health care for admitted stroke patients at Horizon’s hospitals Horizon’s health care professionals strive to see patients within 24 to 48 hours of their event, and provide assessment by a neurologist and a stroke resource nurse, as well as same-day access to diagnostic imaging included computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA). This clinic is held Monday to Friday and is also equipped for telehealth referrals. How is this program provided? This is a collaborative approach to care involving departments of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine to enhance access to stroke prevention and treatment services to all Horizon patients. How can I access this service? Your family physician or primary health care provider may refer you to us for this service. How do I prepare for my appointments? You should wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothes. Clients undergo an assessment prior to enrolment. Saint John Stroke Program The Saint John Stroke Program is comprised of: The Acute Stroke Program – thrombolysis, endovascular therapy and telestroke care for patients with acute ischemic stroke, as well as specialist, nursing and allied health care for admitted stroke patients at the Saint John Regional Hospital. The Stroke Prevention/Urgent Neurovascular Clinic – a referral based clinic for patients with minor stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA). We strive to see patients within 24-48 hours of their event, and provide assessment by a Neurologist and the Stroke Resource Nurse and same-day access to diagnostic imaging included computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA). This clinic is held Monday to Friday and is also equipped for telehealth referrals. An active research program, with participation in investigator driven and industry coordinated research. A collaborative approach to care with the Departments of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine to enhance access to stroke prevention and treatment services to all patients in our region.
