Stroke Program

What is the Stroke Program?

Horizon’s Stroke Program involves:

  • Thrombolysis – a therapy to dissolve dangerous blood clots
  • Endovascular therapy – the insertion of thin tubes in affected areas, only visible under X-rays
  • Telestroke Care – for patients with acute ischemic stroke (sudden loss of blood circulation to an area of the brain), as well as specialist, nursing and allied health care for admitted stroke patients at Horizon’s hospitals

Horizon’s health care professionals strive to see patients within 24 to 48 hours of their event, and provide assessment by a neurologist and a stroke resource nurse, as well as same-day access to diagnostic imaging included computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA).

This clinic is held Monday to Friday and is also equipped for telehealth referrals.

This is a collaborative approach to care involving departments of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Neurosurgery, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine to enhance access to stroke prevention and treatment services to all Horizon patients.
