GLA:D For patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis What is GLA:D Canada? GLA:D Canada is an evidence-based program to treat and manage hip and/or knee osteoarthritic symptoms and help manage and slow the progression of osteoarthritis, improve patient outcomes (increase function, decrease pain), and reduce the need for total joint replacements and opioid use. Evidence suggests patients who are currently suffering with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis and are awaiting surgery, as well as those who have recently been diagnosed could benefit from the education and exercise therapy offered through the GLA:D program. Patients in the program may decide they no longer need surgery, or they will be better able to manage their symptoms while waiting for surgery. This program has potential to reduce surgical wait times and improve overall patient outcomes both before and/or after surgery. EDUCATION EXERCISE 2 Group Education Sessions 12 Group Exercise Classes The current GLA:D program includes supervised education and a targeted neuromuscular exercise program for people with symptomatic hip and or knee osteoarthritis which includes an assessment, two group educational sessions (60 minutes) and 12 group exercise classes. This program is currently offered in-person by a physiotherapist who is certified to administer the GLA:D program.
