St. Joseph’s Hospital Urgent Care Centre

St. Joseph's Hospital

The Urgent Care Centre at Horizon’s St. Joseph’s Hospital offers care to patients of all ages who have unexpected non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries requiring urgent, same-day medical attention and treatment.

Unlike a walk-in clinic or doctor’s office, where patients are treated first come first serve, the Urgent Care Centre triages and treats patients according to a “worst-first” approach.

The Urgent Care Centre team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses, who have immediate access to diagnostic testing such as X-rays and ultrasounds for urgent services to patients where appropriate.

When to visit the Urgent Care Centre

Patients are encouraged to visit the Urgent Care Centre if and when their condition is non-life-threatening, but cannot wait for a scheduled doctor’s appointment.

Examples of conditions that can be treated by the Urgent Care Centre:

  • Deep cuts or wounds that may require stitches
  • Sprains, strains, or deep bruises
  • Simple fractures
  • Mild to moderate asthma attacks
  • Ear infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Diarrhea
  • Rashes

If a patient is assessed by the Urgent Care Centre team and has a severe condition that requires more intensive treatment and possible admission, the patient will be transported by ambulance to the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department.

If you are unsure about where you should go, you can explore your options by calling Tele-Care 811 or visiting www.SoWhyWait.ca.

If you have an emergency, always call 911.

Hours of Operation

The St. Joseph’s Hospital Urgent Care Centre operates 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m.

How long can I expect to wait?

Wait times are difficult to estimate and can change very quickly, but we are noticing that patients with less severe injuries and illnesses are experiencing lower wait times at St. Joseph’s Hospital Urgent Care Centre than patients with the same injuries/illnesses at Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital emergency department.
