Two Horizon hospitals receive national awards for commitment to environmental sustainability

(SAINT JOHN AND SUSSEX) – Horizon’s Sussex Health Centre (SHC) and Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) are being recognized nationally for their commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. Both have received 2025 “Building of the Year – Hospital” awards from ENERGY STAR® Canada.

This is the first time SHC has received the award, and the fourth consecutive year that a Horizon hospital has been recognized. SJRH was recognized in this category in 2022 and 2024, while Horizon’s Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton captured the award in 2023.

“This national acknowledgement is a testament to the amazing work of our dedicated and passionate team members in Sussex and Saint John,” said Natalie Urquhart, VP Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer. “Horizon staff at both sites, as well as our partners at Service New Brunswick, have worked hard to ensure we’re being as efficient as possible to help reduce our carbon footprint. We understand the importance of this work and are actively shaping a healthier, more environmentally conscious health care landscape in communities across New Brunswick.”

ENERGY STAR Canada awards and ENERGY STAR certification for buildings in Canada are overseen by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Through the ENERGY STAR certification for buildings program, six of Horizon’s hospitals have been certified for their efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases.

“I offer my congratulations to this year’s ENERGY STAR Canada award recipients. ENERGY STAR certified products, homes, buildings, and industrial facilities do the important work of improving energy efficiency and increasing affordability for Canadians,” said the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

The focus over the last year at both SHC and SJRH has been on optimizing current resources. Teams have been doing regular reviews of our systems and processes to find areas of improvement. Upgrades to heating and ventilation systems and lighting have also been completed over the last few years.
