Imaging Enhancement Centre at Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital will improve imaging services, overall patient experience

August 24, 2023

All New Brunswickers deserve accessible and quality health care and a positive patient experience, and this initiative is one example of how Horizon is committed to providing that every day

(SAINT JOHN) – Today, Horizon, in partnership with PolyUnity, hosted an innovation summit as part of the launch of the new Imaging Enhancement Centre (IEC) at Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH).

The IEC features cutting-edge technology such as 3D printing, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented reality (AR) applications, providing medical imaging results in technologically advanced formats.

These advanced results, which provide more detail and quicker diagnosis, will improve access to imaging services for patients and the overall patient experience.

“This new technology has already significantly improved the output of our medical imaging services,” said Zach Kilburn, Horizon’s Regional Director of Medical Imaging. “Our team members and requesting health care providers have been very enthusiastic about working with the new technology and the improved patient outcomes they’re seeing. Patients are experiencing enhanced communication with our medical teams, resulting in improved patient experience.”

Overview of the new technology

  • 3D printing converts medical imaging data into detailed, accurate 3D models, allowing surgeons to have a better understanding of complex anatomical structures and thus reducing surgical risks. They also allow for clear and concise treatment explanations for patients and their families.
  • AI in medical imaging analyses and enhances medical images, significantly improving the speed and accuracy of diagnosis and therefore reducing wait times. There has been a 20 per cent increase in one modality for patient throughput since the technology was implemented in March of 2022.
  • AR application overlays digital information onto real-world imagery, providing enhanced visualization of patient-specific anatomical structures during surgical procedures.

The IEC, which has been operating since June 2023, is a significant step to help increase access to imaging services in Saint John. The new equipment was funded by the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation (SJRHF) through their Lions’ Den Medical Competition campaign.

“We are thrilled to see the opening of the IEC,” said Jamie Gallagher, President and CEO of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. “This project is thanks to the generosity of partners and individuals who supported our Lions’ Den medical competition. It is a true reflection of the community’s power in transforming health care for patients across the province.”

This project is another example of the benefits of Horizon’s membership in the Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network.

“This work is another significant step for PolyUnity and its impact across the Atlantic Canada,” said Jennifer Sheils, Horizon’s Vice President Strategy, Transformation and Chief Innovation Officer (CIO). “PolyUnity continues to be a fantastic partner in helping organizations like Horizon move forward to build supply chain resilience, decrease procurement costs, and enhance patient care.”

Improving access to care for New Brunswickers is a key priority for Horizon’s plan to ensure all New Brunswickers receive the quality care they need. This plan consists of three other priorities, including the retention and recruitment of physicians, nurses and staff; improving overall patient experience; and improving patient flow at our health care facilities. Further details about Horizon’s four priority areas are available at HorizonNB.ca.
