(SAINT JOHN)Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital has again been nationally recognized for its commitment to energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable practices after winning a 2024 ENERGY STAR® award for Building of the Year—Hospital.

The ENERGY STAR Canada awards recognize businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through superior energy achievements in Canada.

Over the last two years, the Saint John Regional Hospital introduced a third set of solar panels to its solar arrays and completed the installation of 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers. Recent enhancements include the addition of occupancy sensors in washrooms and administrative areas, switching from pneumatic to digital thermostats, upgraded lighting and lighting controls, retrofitted air handling units, and upgrades to the boiler continuous blowdown system to make it more energy efficient.

“This acknowledgment is celebrated by passionate teams at Horizon and our commitment to pioneering eco-friendly practices, marking a journey of excellence that began with our first Canadian ENERGY STAR certification in 2018” said Jeff Carter, Horizon VP Capital Assets, Infrastructure and Operations.

“What makes this achievement truly remarkable is that all this work was accomplished using existing staff resources—our passionate teams have driven these initiatives forward with determination and ingenuity. Our efforts extend beyond this recognition—we are actively shaping a healthier, more environmentally conscious health care landscape in communities across New Brunswick one energy-saving upgrade at a time.”

“Congratulations to Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital on being awarded a 2024 ENERGY STAR Canada award. Your efforts are driving innovation in energy efficiency, helping Canadians to save money on energy bills and contributing to the fight against climate change. The Government of Canada is very pleased to support energy efficiency solutions on our collective path to a sustainable and prosperous future.” The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources
