Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital Emergency Department temporarily closed Saturday, Aug. 13

August 12, 2022

SACKVILLE – Horizon wishes to advise the public that due to a shortage of available staff, the Emergency Department (ED) at Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital (SMH) will be temporarily closed on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The ED will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12.

ED will reopen at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.

The ED at the SMH is normally open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.

This means all patients requiring emergency medical care will need to be treated at another hospital. All ambulances will be diverted to other hospitals.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please visit your nearest Emergency Department or call 911.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are actively working to recruit physicians and nurses to reduce temporary closures and resume services to the communities we serve. Horizon remains committed to providing safe and quality care, and the decision to temporarily close the ED is made to ensure safe care for our patients and clients.

Those with non-urgent medical needs are encouraged to visit SoWhyWait.ca to help choose the best option for care.

This can include consulting with your local pharmacist, scheduling an appointment with your primary health care provider, visiting your nearest after-hours clinic, booking an appointment through eVisitNB or consulting with a clinician by calling Tele-Care 811.

Consider one of the following options:

  • If you are feeling unwell, don’t delay. Contact your primary care provider as soon as possible.
  • If you are experiencing a minor aliment or need a prescription refill, visit your local pharmacist. Learn more about the many ways a pharmacist can help here.
  • A sore throat, earache or rash could be treated at a local after-hours clinic. After-hours clinics can offer patients same day appointments to treat non-urgent and minor illnesses and ailments. Here, you can find after-hours clinic locations on the New Brunswick Medical Society’s website.
  • Cold or flu symptoms, urinary tract infections, sinus infections and other common medical conditions can be treated, through eVisitNB. Visit https://www.evisitnb.ca/ for more information. This on-demand service is available 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., seven days a week. Virtual care through eVisitNB is covered by New Brunswick Medicare.
