Horizon’s Mobile Crisis Unit in Miramichi offering expanded hours of service

November 10, 2022

(MIRAMICHI) – Horizon wishes to inform the public that its Mobile Crisis Unit (MCU) in the Miramichi area is offering expanded hours of service to better meet the needs of clients by improving access and client experience for this important service.

As of Nov. 1, Miramichi’s Mobile Crisis Unit has expanded its hours of service to respond to addiction and mental health crisis needs in the community from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

In the Miramichi area, anyone looking to contact the Mobile Crisis Unit can phone 506-623-3333

Since launching in 2019, mobile crisis services in Miramichi had been available between the hours of 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily.

These updated hours of operation will result in 28 additional hours of crisis coverage in the community each week.

Mobile Crisis Units provide interventions to defuse situations in the community to individuals and families both during and outside of regular business hours, including on evenings and weekends.

Assessment and crisis intervention occur in the person’s own environment.

The Miramichi service is available to anybody residing within the former Region 7 geographic area, which includes the city of Miramichi and the surrounding Indigenous communities of Metepenagiag, Natoaganeg and Esgenoôpetitj First Nations.

Existing Addiction and Mental Health Services clients or anyone in the community can access these services through self-referral.
Miramichi’s Mobile Crisis Unit is one of five MCUs managed by Horizon. Each unit is staffed by a team of mental health clinicians who provide a timely and coordinated response whenever services are requested.

Mobile crisis services are also available in the Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton and Upper River Valley areas.

Retention and recruitment of physicians, nurses and staff is a key priority of Horizon’s plan to ensure all New Brunswickers receive quality care they need. This plan consists of three other priorities, including improving access to health care, specifically emergency care, surgical services and addictions and mental health; improving overall patient experience; and improving patient flow at our health care facilities. Further details about Horizon’s four priority areas are available at HorizonNB.ca. .
