$1.5 million investment to expand Fundy Health Centre clinical space, care team February 24, 2026 Enhancements to facility will provide needed capacity to connect more people to primary care in Eastern Charlotte (EASTERN CHARLOTTE) – A $1.5 million expansion of Horizon’s Fundy Health Centre will help ensure every unattached resident in Eastern Charlotte has access to a primary care provider. The provincial investment will result in a major renovation that will increase the facility’s clinical space, improving patient flow and access, while also supporting the addition of new health care professionals. Planning for the renovations is already underway, with work anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months. Funding will also support the addition of another nurse practitioner and three administrative support positions. These positions will work alongside the team’s existing physician, three nurse practitioners, seven registered and licensed practical nurses, a social worker, a pharmacist, a dietitian and four administrative staff. Once renovations are complete, the increase in clinical space will also allow the team to accommodate more allied health professionals. “This expansion reflects the Fundy Health Centre’s decades-long commitment to providing high-quality, accessible, and patient-centred care in this community,” said Margaret Melanson, President and CEO of Horizon. “This collaborative care team is receiving essential resources, enhanced supports, and redesigned clinical space to continue onboarding patients and serving the region now and into the future.” The health centre currently serves 4,159 patients and has been in operation for approximately 25 years. Since that time, the centre has continually responded to the health care needs of the community and has grown in size, range of services and impact to the region. The centre currently provides primary care services, transitional care services (including chronic disease management and women’s health services), outpatient services, work with Extra Mural, discharge planning, and follow-up care based on referrals from Emergency Medical Program services and Horizon’s Charlotte County Hospital. The team also operates an access clinic that provides care to anyone in need, regardless of if they’re a rostered patient or not. In January 2026, the centre announced an expansion of this access clinic which has now grown to provide more appointment times, increased availability and reduced wait times. Premier Susan Holt said the growth of the Fundy Health Centre is another tangible sign of progress in the province’s efforts to improve access to primary care. “This investment means that every person currently on the NB Health Link waitlist in the Eastern Charlotte region will be connected with a primary care provider,” said Premier Susan Holt. “By upgrading the Fundy Health Centre and strengthening its collaborative care team, we’re making sure families have reliable, timely access to care close to home, where and when they need it most.” The Fundy Health Centre is actively accepting new patients and will continue to expand its roster in a thoughtful and sustainable way. With 1,138 people currently on the provincial waitlist in the community, the centre plans to begin onboarding these patients once the renovation is complete. “Shifting to a collaborative, community-based system is how we are transforming primary health care in New Brunswick,” said Health Minister John Dornan. “Enhancing the Fundy Health Centre means more residents in Eastern Charlotte will benefit from the integrated support of a collaborative care team.” Horizon is continuing to roll out new Family Health Teams across its service areas and improve collaborative care centres, like Fundy Health Centre, to meet its 2029 goal of ensuring every resident has a primary care provider. Since Horizon launched its Primary Care strategy in April 2025, nearly 10,000 patients have been matched with a team. About Family Health Teams Horizon’s transformative primary care strategy will establish Family Health Teams across the province, aiming to match all New Brunswickers who live in areas served by Horizon with a local team of collaborative health care providers by 2029. This best practice approach will provide better access and an improved patient experience by bringing together different health care practitioners with a variety of competencies, skills, and experiences to address the needs of the patients they serve. Family Health Team members will include a range of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals and medical office assistants. Currently, seven Family Health Teams are in various stages of implementation, including Fredericton North, Tantramar, Carleton North, Nordin (Miramichi), Mapleton (Moncton), St. Stephen and Saint John North End. In addition, Horizon’s 46 existing Community Health Centres are undergoing improvements and transformations to increase access and optimize capacity to serve patients within the Family Health Team model. New Brunswickers who do not have a primary care provider should continue to register with the provincial patient waitlist (NB Health Link). As new local Family Health Teams are established, New Brunswickers registered on this list will be contacted and matched with a team in their community.
