Nutrition

The goal of the Nutrition Program is to promote healthy eating and make the healthy choice the easy choice for New Brunswick communities.

The program aims to promote access to healthy foods, healthy eating environments and breastfeeding. To positively impact communities, staff work with multiple partners using a variety of strategies identified in the New Brunswick Public Health Nutrition Framework for Action. The framework focuses on the following 5 priority areas for action:

Food security is the ability of all people at all times to have access to nutritious, safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate food that is managed in an environmentally and socially responsible way.

Below are some examples of food security initiatives where Public Health can be involved:

  • Food for All NB
  • Community Food Mentors
  • Everybody Eats
  • Food Programs Map
  • Chefs! Program

The environments where New Brunswickers spend most of their time strongly influence their behaviours, including eating habits.

Making healthy food choices is much easier in an environment that makes healthy, affordable and appealing food options readily accessible.

Below are some examples of healthy environments initiatives where Public Health can be involved:

  • Healthy Eating in Recreation Settings: A Provincial Scan of New Brunswick
  • Healthy Fundraising: It Just Makes Sense
  • 5210: A Way of Life

Public Health dietitians offer home visits for qualifying pregnant women with the Healthy Families, Healthy Babies Program. Public Health dietitians also support young families to develop healthy eating habits.

Pregnancy and early childhood nutrition information:

  • Healthy pregnancy and early childhood
  • Nutrition during pregnancy
  • Infant feeding and nutrition

Breastfeeding is the best way to feed babies.

Breast milk is important for the healthy growth and development. Babies should be exclusively breastfed to six months of age and then continue to be breastfed with appropriate complementary feeding to two years of age and beyond.

For more information visit New Brunswick’s Breastfeeding and Baby-Friendly Initiative.

Public Health dietitians support school-aged children and youth through the Healthy Learners in School Program.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Heart Healthy Schools program also supports healthy nutrition in schools.
