Small actions make a big impact: Meet an EVS worker keeping our hospitals clean and safe

April 19, 2022

Meet Aaron, an environmental services (EVS) worker at Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aaron saw the stress and pressure put on health care workers and wanted to help make a difference, so he applied and was hired to work in EVS.

To get to know him better, we asked Aaron a few questions about his job.

What tasks do you perform daily?

“I perform high-touch area cleaning,” said Aaron. “We go to the units and clean everything people touch, such as the Purell (dispensers) (hand sanitizers), handrails, keyboards, and sinks,” said Aaron.

Our EVS workers support patient care by performing a variety of cleaning duties.

How do EVS workers contribute to the hospital environment?

“From supervisors, to co-workers, to the nurses, to health care teams, everyone appreciates a clean work area, which is what we provide,” said Aaron. “If everyone does something small, then it becomes something bigger, making the hospital safer for everyone.”

EVS workers play a crucial role in keeping everyone safe by providing a clean work environment. Their role has been extremely important to fight the spread of COVID-19 throughout our facilities.

What’s the best part of your job?

“Even saying ‘hi’ to someone can make their day,” said Aaron.

Meaningful conversations with patients and staff are one of the most enjoyable parts of Aaron’s job. He takes pride knowing he is positively contributing to patients’ hospital stays, in more ways than one.
