The Jean Elizabeth Saunders Irving Obstetrics and Newborn Care Unit will welcome its first patients on May 14, 2025

(MONCTON) – Horizon Health Network is pleased to announce the new Jean Elizabeth Saunders Irving Obstetrics and Newborn Care Unit at The Moncton Hospital (TMH) will open for patient care on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

At all times, expecting individuals and their families need to use the main entrance of the new unit on MacBeath Avenue (see photo below). After hours (5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., 7 days a week), this entrance will be locked, and patients can use the intercom to notify nursing staff of their arrival, and someone will escort them inside. Wayfinding signage is also in place.

In preparation, all individuals in the TMH service area who are 35 weeks pregnant or more have been contacted by their health care team with information on what to expect during this transition.

The Jean Elizabeth Saunders Irving Obstetrics and Newborn Care Unit is a modern space that offers advanced care for newborns and their families. It features the latest technology in a space built for safety, quality, and patient-centred care, such as wireless fetal monitors and purpose-built rooms including spacious areas for families. This transformational project is a partnership between Horizon, the Government of New Brunswick, and the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.

Each year, close to 1,200 babies are born at The Moncton Hospital; 200 of those newborns are admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. There are over 3,500 Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic visits annually.
