Horizon expands Fredericton Urgent Treatment Centre to five days a week, enhancing access to care

(FREDERICTON) – Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is excited to announce that, beginning Monday, September 16, the Fredericton Urgent Treatment Centre will extend its operating schedule to five days per week, significantly increasing access to urgent care services in the region.

The expanded days of service mean the facility will now be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., after previously operating three days a week.

Horizon’s Fredericton Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), located at the Brookside Mall on the city’s northside, has been serving the community since late 2023, providing care to patients with non-life-threatening but urgent health concerns that require same-day medical attention.

Since opening, the centre has treated over 5,000 patients, offering a critical alternative to emergency departments for individuals with conditions such as minor injuries, infections, and other acute but non-emergency needs.

The Urgent Treatment Centre is staffed by a team of dedicated health care professionals from the Fredericton area, including those from the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECRH) and Oromocto Public Hospital (OPH).

“The Fredericton Urgent Treatment Centre has made a substantial impact on health care delivery in our community, and we are thrilled to expand our service to five days a week,” said Dr. Ash McLellan, Medical Director for Horizon in the Fredericton area. “This expansion underscores our commitment to improving access to timely, high-quality care for our patients, and it reflects the dedication of our exceptional team of physicians, nurses, and staff who continue to go above and beyond in supporting our patients.”

Patients with urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, such as flu-like symptoms, minor cuts, sprains, ear, nose, and eye issues, skin conditions, and allergic reactions, are encouraged to visit the centre for prompt care. The facility also provides on-site X-ray services and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with plans to adopt a traditional triage system based on acuity levels as the service evolves.

Horizon remains committed to enhancing the UTC’s services as staffing and resources allow, with the goal of further improving patient flow and overall care experiences across the region.

For more serious health concerns, such as chest pains, severe injuries, or signs of stroke, individuals should continue to call 911 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.
