Horizon Health Network appoints Chief Nursing Officer December 14, 2021 Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda Kinney as Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. This position will play an integral role on Horizon’s Executive Leadership Team, as Brenda will be responsible to lead the strategy for nursing services and nursing engagement across Horizon. Prior to this appointment, Brenda served as the Executive Director for Horizon’s Saint John area since 2013. Brenda is a highly experienced and well-known nurse leader in New Brunswick, having served as President of the Nurses Association of New Brunswick and on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Nurses Association in 2015 – 2017. The creation of this new role was developed to have a focused resource on Horizon’s Executive Leadership Team to lead nursing practice, nursing engagement and retention programs, nursing budgets, and for planning new patient services. Given the current nursing shortage Horizon’s Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer will work closely with Horizon’s Human Resources Department and community leaders to attract and retain nursing staff. “I’m delighted to take on this new role,” said Brenda Kinney, Horizon’s new Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. “I look forward to tackling the challenges we have before us, including attracting nurses to hard to recruit areas, and helping to foster an environment where nurses are thriving”. “Brenda is an exceptional health care leader and we are fortunate she will be Horizon’s Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer”, said Dr. John Dornan, Horizon’s interim President and CEO. “With her leadership skills and nursing experience, she will be key to maintaining and building strong relationships with our key partners, including the Department of Health, Vitalité Health Network, academic institutions and communities.” Brenda has over 40 years of nursing experience and began her nursing career as a staff nurse in Saint John and shifted quickly into a nursing supervisor role. Brenda completed her Diploma in Nursing in 1981 from the Saint John School of Nursing, and attained her Bachelor of Nursing (BN), from the University of New Brunswick in 1998. In 2006, Brenda completed her Master of Nursing (MN) from Athabasca University. Brenda joined Horizon in 2009 as director of Nursing Professional Practice and after four years moved to the role of Regional Director of Nursing Practice. In 2013, she moved into her current role as Executive Director of the Saint John area of Horizon.
